Virginia Beach-based distillery takes 3 gold, 4 silver for bottled craft spirits & Coastal Cocktails
Virginia Beach’s Tarnished Truth Distilling Company won three gold and four silver medals at the American Distilling Institute’s 2023 International Spirits Competition.
The 6-year-old distillery, located a block from the ocean inside the Historic Cavalier Hotel, picked up wins for both its Tarnished Truth distilled spirits and Coastal Cocktails ready-to-drink canned cocktails.
“This is obviously a great honor for everyone at Tarnished Truth and Coastal Cocktails,” said Tarnished Truth co-owner and operator Andrew Yancey. “Creating premium, delicious and approachable spirits and canned cocktails is our passion, and these awards truly validate our team’s hard work and dedication.”
Tarnished Truth’s 2023 International Spirits Competition awards included:
- Gold Medal: Coastal Cocktails Blackberry Bramble
- Gold Medal: Coastal Cocktails Cucumber Collins
- Gold Medal: Fourth Handle Gin

- Silver Medal: Discretion Single Barrel Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey
- Silver Medal: Old Cavalier Bourbon Cream

The American Distilling Institute is the largest small-batch, independently owned craft distillery association in the world. At its 2023 International Spirits Competition, 50 judges and 15 stewards sampled 1,000 of the best craft spirits over three days – at a rate of nearly 250 glasses per hour. Organizers say it is the first spirits competition to provide written feedback for every entry, with judges enjoying the freedom to award only the best entries.
“Everything I want in an RTD (ready-to-drink beverage),” said one judge about Coastal Cocktails’ Orange Crush.
“This is extremely refreshing for summer sipping on a sunny deck,” raved another judge about Coastal Cocktails’ Blackberry Bramble.
The 2023 International Spirits Competition awards will be formally presented during ADI’s 20th anniversary conference in Las Vegas this August.
